Causeway update and new developments

Wow another New Year has arrived! It seems to come around faster each year and the years appear to become shorter. I think this happens because of age; when we are young we think we will live forever and the years pass comparatively slowly.

Here the mega yachts have been arriving regularly since the beginning of December. This amount of movement announces a active winter season, like the birds that fly down south to warmer climates. During the two weeks prior to Christmas we had a lot of rain. This is quite unusual and was of course very disappointing for the sun worshippers; we feel for them. For those of us that live here all year round we find it a nice change to be cool, it keeps our cisterns full and the island very green. In any event, air-conditions are not often needed between December and March. It really is the most perfect weather, in the eighties during the daytime and low seventies at night.

This winter season looks very promising. We now have hustle and bustle everywhere and therestaurants are full. It is the last day of the year and as I am writing at my desk I am also looking out of the window and thankfully traffic on the main street in Simpson Bay is moving well. This is a relief for us having suffered the traffic jams over the past few years. The new causeway bridge over the Lagoon has been open for about a week and what a difference it has made! This shows good foresight by one of our leading young politicians who had quite a lot of opposition to overcome but he never gave up. I offer my congratulations and thanks to him. I have driven over it a few times already and I am immensely impressed. There are protected walkways on both sides for the benefit of walkers, joggers, and cyclists alike to use safely so don’t forget to look out for me jogging along there the next time you pass over it! More seriously, I also offer my congratulations to the St. Maarten government on this major achievement. The timing was perfect (almost) as the island is very busy. Recently we had the highest number of cruise ship visitors in one day, there were 25,000. Clearly, St. Maarten is still the most desirable cruise ship destination in the Caribbean and thankfully the police handled it very well.

Happily crime in general has reduced but like everywhere you must take care not to leave valuables in a rental car especially when you go to one of our wonderful beaches. Unfortunately, rentals are easily recognized by their license plates and they are always the first to be targeted. On a more pleasant subject the Government is continuing to improve the island’s infrastructure, especially the harbor and airport extension, as well as promenade improvements.

With respect to business, many villa rentals and especially smaller apartments on the beach are fully booked throughout the high season. Real estate sales are up after a long slow summer and clearly one of the most solid investments remains real estate.  Apartments are the leaders, particularly when they are turn-key with few personal maintenance involvements. I find that very logical; it means less baggage and makes life easier.  Of course high end homes for larger more well to do families still exist and these can also make for a good investment due to income produced through vacation rentals.

For Boat lovers and Tennis players only, Las Brisas is the place ,the most elegant finished small waterfront Apartment Development on the Island security 24/7 pre-construction prices assure a 25 to 30 % appreciation value by construction finish.

For Beach lovers freestanding 3 bedroom villas with Beach and 24/7 security pre-construction prices assure minimum of 30% appreciation value by construction finish.

I recently purchased a wonderful 3-bedroom lagoon front apartment with a boat slip under construction (I love boating), tennis courts, an Olympic size swimming pool, 24/7 security and is in the most beautifully finished small complex on the island– Las Brisas. Construction was finished within 24 months.

My children are on their way to leave the nest, two of my boys Nicolas and Geraldo ( The Shady Brothers) are now singers and song writers and are under contract for recordings and touring in Europe.  My daughter, Alexandra is studying in Amsterdam and Dieter jr. looks as if he is moving forward in my footsteps joining his brother, Jonathan, in the business. I imagine many of you have had similar scenarios.

By the way from my own experience I have found that to get involved on the ground floor in purchasing real estate is the most rewarding investment and it is one that I can rely on. If you are coming down here or are here already we would be happy to see you personally so please don’t hesitate to stop by. I am cutting down a bit and devoting my time to my boys but I am always here in the mornings and Jonathan is here full time and more.

Now it only remains for us to wish you all the best for this New Year of 2014 with good health, happiness, and God’s blessings.
